About AKW

A family excavating outfit, not a fleet with a sales office.

New Cooper Husemann has recently stepped into an ownership role and is now AKW's estimator, working alongside Kevin and Michelle.

AKW Excavating started in 2014 with Kevin and Michelle Windish out of Brimfield, Illinois. Kevin has been in the excavating business for 30 plus years, long enough to have dug through most kinds of ground this part of the state can serve up.

When you call, you talk to the people who run the machines, not a dispatcher. The equipment in these photos is the equipment that shows up. Quotes come from walking your ground, not from a satellite photo, and the job is done when the water runs where it should.

The part most contractors skip

GPS field tile install and mapping

Tile only works if the grade is right for the whole run. AKW installs with GPS machine control, which holds the planned grade foot by foot instead of trusting an eyeball and a laser pole. No bellies in the line, no backfall, no dead runs you find out about next spring.

Every job is also mapped as it goes in. You get an as-built record of where every main and lateral sits, how deep, and what size. When you repair a line in ten years, add a wet spot to the system, or sell the farm, that map is worth real money.

  1. Walk the ground. Find where the water sits, plan the runs and the outlet.
  2. Install on grade. GPS machine control holds the plan through the whole pull.
  3. Hand over the map. The as-built tile map is yours to keep, on paper and as a file.
